I stared at her, my hands gripping hers. My time was running out. It was only a matter of time before I turned. Before the sea called me home.
“I don’t understand, Joseph,” Tears appeared in her eyes. “Why must you leave?”
Her tears pained me. The sound of the waves crashing only added to that pain. They were the constant reminder of the duty that was pulling me away from her.
I cupped her cheeks. “I must return to my people.” I brushed away her tears.
“Why can’t you stay?” She gripped my shirt. “Why can’t you stay with me?”
I tried to smile even though I was fighting my own tears. The sun would rise soon. Time was to short.
“I must return,” I whispered. “But don’t worry, I’ll be back before you know it.”
Her arms wrapped around my neck, and she pulled me close, burying her face in my chest. “Please.” Her voice was barely a whisper.
I knew her heart was breaking. Mine was breaking with her. I pulled back and looked at the sky. The sun was just starting to rise over the sea, it’s golden glow reflected on the water’s surface.
I looked down at her, pulling her in for one last kiss. I didn’t know when I would return. If I would return.
No! I would return. Nothing would stop me from coming back to her.
I pulled back, looking into her bright, hazel eyes. I brushed a strand of hair behind her ear.
“Remember, my darling, I will always love you.”
I stepped back. I could feel my legs starting to come together. Any moment now.
“I love you. Forever, I will love you and no other. I will wait for you, my darling Joseph.” Her words were strong, confident. Just like her.
I ran towards the water, diving into the blue as my legs joined together to form my tail. I looked at the shore through the water and saw her standing on the beach. Her body was shaking as she cried. My heart broke. I wanted to swim to her, wrap her in my arms and brush away her tears. But I couldn’t. I have to go back.
I dove into the depths, swimming deeper and deeper into the dark water. One year. One year until I can hold her again. Until I can be with her.
She knew I loved her and only her. She knew she would always own my heart, on land and in the sea.
