Well, today I thought I would post an old snippet I wrote. It’s short, but I thought you guys would enjoy it.
~~~
Everything was overgrown.
The treehouse I used to play in as a child stood before me. Mom told me not to come back, but I had to. I had to see it one last time.
This is where I had most of my firsts. My first playdate, my first birthday party, my first kiss. I basically grew up in this treehouse. Everything special happened here, in this old, rotting treehouse.
I climbed up the ladder and stepped inside, careful not to step on the rotted wood. She promised she’d meet me here. To say goodbye.
I heard a squeak behind me.
“Chris?”
I turned and saw her standing in the doorway, her soft brown hair falling down her shoulders. Her bright, blue eyes stared at me. She was beautiful. As beautiful as I remember.
I smiled. “Hi, Ava.”
She stared at me, her eyes searching. I looked down at my military uniform.
“You’re really doing it?” She asked slowly walking over to me.
I nodded. “I’m being shipped out tomorrow.”
Without warning, she was suddenly in my arms, her arms wrapping around my neck. I hugged her back, not willing to let go of her.
“I’m going to miss you.” She whispered, pulling back to look at me, tears streaming down her cheeks.
I gently wiped them away with my thumb. “I’m going to miss you too.” I leaned in and kissed her.
We stood there, in that old, overgrown treehouse, for as long as we could.
This is where I had all my firsts. And it will be where I have all my lasts.
