Ronyn led me and Molly deeper into the woods. He moved quickly, staying a few feet in front of us. Every now and then he would look back at us to make sure we were still following him. His ears perked forward, listening for any dangers that might cross our path. Molly and I followed close behind him, doing our best to keep up with him. I kept a firm grip on Molly’s hand.
“Do you really believe what Liam was telling us?” Molly asked me as we walked.
I glanced at her. “I don’t know. I mean, I have seen the evidence of what he was saying. I just don’t understand why Dad never told us about any of it.”
“Maybe he meant to. Before he died.”
We continued on in silence, each of us consumed by our own thoughts. Could that be true? Was he really going to tell us? It didn’t make sense. Why would he and Mom tell me I was crazy if they both knew the truth? Why would they keep something like this from us? The situation was too confusing for me to make any sense of it. I really needed Liam to finish explaining.
As we walked, I looked around at the forest. We walked along a path that was surrounded by trees. The leaves on the trees were bright and green. A few dewdrops dripped off the leaves. Birds sat amongst the branches, whistling their soft melodies. The smell of wet earth filled my nose. The mud beneath my feet made squish sounds every time I took a step. The sun was barely peeking through the thick foliage, and a slight mist covered the trail ahead of us. It was beautiful. Like a scene from a novel or something. I sighed, turning my attention back to Ronyn.
The dog has stopped a few feet ahead of us, waiting for us to catch up with him. Suddenly, its ears perked up, and his head spun around. It growled, backing up to stop us. Molly and I stopped dead in our tracks, listening to the sounds of the forest. All I could hear was the rustling wind and dripping dewdrops.
“What is it, boy?” I asked the dog, stepping closer to it. “What do you hear?”
The dog growled again, its ears flattening against its head. He stood in front of us, blocking us from continuing down the path. He stared straight ahead, his fangs baring.
A man’s figure stepped out from behind the mist. The man was cloaked in darkness, and he carried a staff. A sense of fear ran down my spin as the figure walked closer. The tip of the staff was glowing. My grip tightened on Molly’s hand. I felt her grip it back.
“Stella, the horn. Blow the horn!” Molly whispered, her voice panicked.
I reached for the horn that hung at my belt. As I unhooked it, Ronyn tilted his nose skyward and howled. A few answering howls came from the woods. Several other dogs come running out from behind the trees to stand in between Molly and me and the advancing figure. Okay, maybe Ronyn wasn’t just a dog.
“Stella!”
Right, the horn.
I unhooked the horn from my belt and lifted it to my lips. When I blew into it, a loud blast echoed from within it. The sound echoed throughout the forest, making the birds scatter. The wolves that surrounded us howled, echoing the sound.
The figure had stopped when he saw me pull out the horn.
He let out a chuckle. “Your guardians will not be able to help you, thief.”
