Fear gripped my heart. Liam must have sensed it cause he put his hand on my arm and told me it was going to be okay. I nodded, turning my attention back to Molly. She looked like she was hyperventilating. I wrapped my arm around her, trying to give her comfort.
“We need to get out of here.” Ethyn stated. He was holding his sword and was watching the man.
His eyes met Liam’s, who gave him a slight nod. Some silent understanding passed between them. I wondered what silent conversation was going on between the two. I didn’t really have time to ask them. The dragon roared, shaking the earth beneath my feet. I grabbed hold of Liam’s arm, trying to keep my balance.
Liam stepped in front of me, his hand on the hilt of his sword. Ethyn did the same with Molly. Ronyn called to the other wolves, and they surrounded us, snarling. Behind us, the forest was catching on fire. I could smell the smoke. It burned my eyes, my nose. Molly coughed, stepping closer to me. I could see the fear in her eyes.
Liam turned to face the man, unsheathing his sword as he did so.
The man smiled. “Well, well, how good it is to see you again, Liam.”
“I wish I could say the same about you, Gael.” Liam responded, stepping forward so he was standing in front of me.
The man, Gael, smiled. “I merely want my stone, Liam. There is no need for such harshness.”
“That stone never belonged to you.”
The man scowled. “That’s what you said about Earth and look how it turned out. The humans have ruined it.”
“Maybe, but they are also the ones who saved it. Your views are flawed, Gael. You see only one side of the issue.”
The man, Gael, wasn’t listening. He shook his head, raising his staff. “Give me the stone.”
“No.” Liam raised his sword in challenge.
A bright orb flew from the man’s staff, flying straight towards us. Liam and Ethyn raised their swords. An invisible shield wrapped around us, stopping the orb in its track.
My eyes widened. Molly and I exchanged a glance, both of us not able to hide our surprise. They had used magic.
“Run!” Liam screamed. “We can’t hold this forever.”
Ronyn took off, and Molly and I followed. Liam and Ethyn ran behind us, keeping their swords raised. I could faintly hear Gael shouting in rage. He sent blast after blast at us, but thanks to the shield, none of them hit us. We ran down the path, heading deeper and deeper into the woods. Where are we going?
I heard the dragon’s wings behind us and turned just in time to see a large fire ball fly at us. It hit the shield with enough force to make it shake. Ethyn let out a cry and fell backwards, the sword slipping from his hand. Our shield was getting weaker. One more blast, and we would be sitting ducks.
Liam ran to Ethyn’s side to check on him. Molly and I joined him.
“Is he okay?” Molly asked.
Liam helped Ethyn to his feet. “His energy has been drained. We need to hurry.”
“Where exactly are we going?” I asked as we started down the path again, this time at a slower pace.
“Somewhere safe,” Liam looked at me, his eyes meeting mine. “I need you to trust me.”
With a sigh, I followed after them, taking Molly’s hand in mine again.
A roar broke through the air. I spun around, looking up at the sky. The dragon flew towards us again, fire bursting from its jaw.
“Down!” Liam shouted.
I ducked, pulling Molly down with me. Ethyn crouched in at our backs, shielding us as much as he could. Liam stood in the middle of the shield, holding up his sword. The blast hit the shield, causing an explosion of fire and magic. Liam was blown backwards, hitting the ground hard.
“Liam!” After making sure Ethyn had hold of Molly, I ran to his side.
There was a large burn on his arm, but other than that he looked fine. He breathed hard as he struggled to sit up. I helped him.
“Can you walk?”
He nodded. “I think so.”
“Liam, look out!” The shout came from Ethyn.
The dragon released another blast of fire, this time aimed directly at us. Liam had no strength to create another shield. My hands flew forward, and the strangest thing happened. I felt this pulse of energy flow through me. I could feel it flying out of my hands, forming a shield above our heads. I could barely register what was happening. As the blast of fire collided with the shield, a scream escaped my lips. That energy I had felt seemed to be ripped out of me. I fell to the ground, unable to support myself. My body felt numb. I laid in the dirt, staring up to the sky. Fire flickered around me. The smoke burned my lungs, but I couldn’t move. My ears were ringing.
Liam appeared in my line of vision. His lips were moving, but I couldn’t hear what he was saying. I tried to focus, but I couldn’t. Liam brushed a strand of hair out of my face. After a moment, his voice came into focus.
“Stella, talk to me. Can you try to sit up?”
I shook my head. My body was too numb. I couldn’t move a muscle. Molly appeared next to me, tears falling down her cheeks. She gripped my hand, hard. I moaned, closing my eyes. I felt hands on my arms and suddenly someone was lifting me up. My eyes opened a little, and I saw Liam’s face.
“They’re turning back.” That was Ethyn’s voice.
“We need to get to the safe house, and quick. She needs treatment.” That was Liam.
I leaned my head against Liam’s chest, closing my eyes again. The sound of pounding footsteps filled my ears as I slipped into sleep.
